Digital employees, in context
A working lens for this project: a role-scoped agent that pursues ongoing work, retains organizational context, uses software tools, and has explicit authority, handoff and outcome checks. This is an organizing proposal, not an industry standard or a certification of the products below.
Keep the tree about work. Treat digital employees as a role and operating-model lens across task classes; software and GUI/API/CLI remain separate dimensions.
Six dimensions for describing a digital employee
Role and deliverables
What business responsibility and measurable outcome does the agent own?
Trigger and duration
On demand, on an event, on a schedule, or across a continuing queue?
Context and memory
Which organizational state must survive handoffs and session boundaries?
Software and interfaces
Which applications, GUI actions, APIs and terminals actually carry the work?
Authority and handoff
Which actions are delegated, and when must a person or another agent take over?
Recovery and verification
Can work resume after interruption, avoid duplicate actions, and produce inspectable completion evidence?
Primary sources and evidence boundaries
19 entries reviewed on 2026-10-16. This topic adds no imported task definitions or benchmark runs. Product documentation, open code and evaluated performance are different evidence.
TheAgentCompany
A simulated software-company benchmark combining web work, code, programs and coworker communication. Useful for work episodes that span tools and roles.
WorkArena / WorkArena++
ServiceNow knowledge-work tasks and their composition. The repository distinguishes atomic tasks from compositional planning, reasoning and memory tasks; evaluation requires provisioned ServiceNow instances.
WorkWorlds
A research infrastructure that fixes organizational state and an employee seat before tasks are introduced. It highlights context discovery as part of workplace evaluation.
Human and Digital Worker Integration
A position paper on human involvement, different autonomy levels and evaluation beyond productivity when integrating digital workers into business processes.
Digital Employee Architecture
A preprint proposes an organizational framing around agent identity, role boundaries, memory, tool access and evidence. Included as a proposed framework rather than a settled definition.
bytefolk / Digital Employee
A local workspace model that makes organizational positions addressable, with context and permission boundaries. Its README separates released previews from planned product paths.
markfulton / AI Employees
Role folders and scheduled business routines built around existing agent hosts, including browser and desktop work. A concrete example of packaging recurring responsibilities as employees.
OpenBMB / StaffDeck
An enterprise digital-employee platform whose release notes describe SOP editing, sandboxing and cooperation among multiple staff agents.
Salesforce Agentforce
Role-oriented enterprise agents that use business knowledge and actions, with service and sales as prominent product scenarios.
Microsoft Copilot Studio
Event and recurrence triggers can start agent work without a new chat prompt. This is evidence for distinguishing triggered ongoing work from request-only assistants.
UiPath / Maestro
A process-orchestration platform bringing agents, robots and people into business workflows. Useful for separating the worker role from its execution and orchestration tools.
Automation Anywhere
Current AI-agent documentation and legacy Digital Worker documentation show the term spanning both agentic workflows and packaged process automation.
SS&C Blue Prism
The FAQ separates the automation defining the work from the software worker performing it. This supports keeping actors distinct from work categories.
ServiceNow AI Agents
Enterprise agent offerings organized around IT, customer service and HR workflows, with platform-level orchestration and control.
11x / Alice and Julian
The product frames workers around inbound and outbound sales responsibilities, with goals, business context, boundaries and escalation paths.
Artisan / Ava
A commercial AI-employee framing centered on sales development. Included as a role-based product example rather than as benchmark evidence.
Lindy
An AI-teammate product positioned around team context and connected workplace tools. Useful for studying the coworker framing and cross-tool work.
阿里云伶鹊 / Digital Employee
The documented product is a voice contact-center employee with knowledge access, SOP flows and transfer to human service. A digital employee need not be a desktop GUI agent.
百度智能云 / 数字员工内容营销
This digital-employee product family includes digital likenesses, video production and AI presenters. Avatar presentation should be distinguished from autonomous workplace execution.
A proposal for CUA-Anything
A next evaluation unit could be a role episode: several linked tasks, persistent state, an event trigger, an interruption, a human handoff, and a final artifact or application-state check. Score completion, handoff quality, recovery and side effects separately. This is a proposed CUA-Anything extension, not an implemented benchmark.
